SAN DIEGO – A 60-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday when an acquaintance doused her with pepper spray and beat her with a baseball bat at her mother’s Logan Heights home, police reported.
The victim managed to make a 911 call after being attacked at the house on 33rd Street near Gillette Street about 10:30 a.m., according to San Diego police. Medics took her to a hospital for treatment of severe head trauma.
Following the assault, her 40-year-old accused assailant locked himself inside the home, turned on a gas line from a stove or oven and “threatened to blow himself up,” Officer Dino Delimitros said.
Police shut off the supply of natural gas to the home while trying in vain to persuade the man to come outside and surrender peaceably.
About 11:45 a.m., officers broke down a door, rushed inside and took the suspect into custody without further incident. His name was not immediately available.
It was unclear what prompted the violence.
