SAN DIEGO — A San Diego man drove the body of a woman he said was his wife to the San Diego Police Department’s downtown headquarters early Tuesday, and police were trying to determine how she died, authorities said.

Man Drives wife's body to police stationThe man flagged down officers at 14th and Broadway near police headquarters shortly after 1:30 a.m., according to San Diego police Lt. Jorge Duran. Officers found the woman in the rear compartment of the man’s yellow crew-cab pickup truck and paramedics were called to confirm her death, he said.

The body bore no obvious signs of trauma, Duran said, but an autopsy was expected to be conducted this afternoon to determine a cause of death.

The woman’s identity was not immediately confirmed, though the man told officers she was his wife and she appeared to be in her 40s, Duran said, adding that the man’s demeanor was “calm.” He was detained for questioning and was cooperating, the lieutenant said.

Though he initially described the man as a suspect, Duran later said investigators were unsure whether the death was a homicide, suicide or accident.

A small amount of blood was found on the vehicle’s floor bed but not on the man, Duran said. He said search warrants were being requested for a home and another location as part of the investigation.

The man parked his truck in metered parking facing police headquarters on 14th Street, prompting police to close 14th Street from Broadway to E Street. From the street, a hose could be seen running from the truck’s exhaust pipe to its cab, but police could not immediately explain its significance.

“We don’t know if (the driver) parked here, then did that, or if he drove here like that,” San Diego police Lt. Jorge Duran said. “That’s what we’re still trying to figure out.”

The street closure remained in effect as of 7 a.m.
