CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A man was found shot dead Wednesday inside an SUV that plowed through the front gate of a South Bay public storage business and crashed to a halt against a building, officials said.
Police said the man was shot shortly after noon while driving his tan Toyota Highlander northbound on Industrial Boulevard in Chula Vista.
Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle moving at low speed with the unidentified driver slumped over the steering wheel, according to police.
Reaching a "T" intersection alongside the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, the SUV entered the parking lot and struck the closed front gate of L Street Self Storage, pushing it open, Lt. Eric Thunberg said. The vehicle then continued on, rolling over the grounds of the business until it struck a structure.
Officers arrived to find the sole occupant of the vehicle dead with one gunshot to the head.
"We don't know where the shooter was, we don't know if it was car-to-car or a pedestrian that walked up, we don't know if it was a known subject or a stranger at this point," said Thunberg.
Homicide detectives and personnel with the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office were called in to investigate the death, the lieutenant said.
The Medical Examiner's Office will release the name of the victim after it conducts an autopsy in the coming days.
