SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Police Department is investigating after reports of a deadly shooting.

Police were still on scene around 12:50 p.m. Saturday in the 4100 block of Epsilon Street of the Shelltown area, just north of National City.

Police added several 911 calls came in around 1:38 a.m. Saturday.

"I was in my room and I just heard the gunshots - like five or six of them," said Pablo Rodriquez who lives down the street. "I lost count but it was really close."

Police arrived to find two victims on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds.

"Both of the victims were taken to the hospital, " according to San Diego police acting homicide Lt. Michelle Velovich. "A Hispanic male in his early 50's unfortunately died from his injuries. The other victim, a Hispanic male who is 49-years-old, is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries."

Velovich added initial reports indicated there was a vehicle speeding away but there is no lead on who did it.

"I just heard like some tires squeaking like leaving the scene or something," Rodriquez recalled. "I heard a car speeding away."

The victims are identified but names have not been released pending notification of their families.

"We don't have any information about a motive at this time," Velovich said. "The neighbors in this area have been helpful to police."

Homicide detectives are on scene.
