BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. — Authorities Friday identified a pair of Borrego Springs residents — a retirement-age woman and her adult son — who died in a murder-suicide at their desert-area home.

Deputies conducting a welfare check at the request of a concerned neighbor found 71-year-old Ann Sides and her 43-year-old son, Corey, dead from gunshot wounds in the house in the 2900 block of Double O Road on Wednesday morning, according to sheriff’s officials.

Investigators determined that Corey Sides shot his mother before turning the gun on himself.

A woman who lives nearby reported that she hadn’t seen the two since last Friday, homicide Lt. Chad Boudreau said.

The motive for the shootings and when they occurred remained under investigation Friday afternoon, the lieutenant said.

Detectives were not aware of any history of violence or serious illness in the Sides’ household, according to Boudreau.
