SAN DIEGO – A La Mesa homicide suspect is in custody Wednesday, and San Diego police are investigating the circumstances of his arrest after a La Mesa police detective fired several shots when he came face-to-face with the alleged killer in Talmadge Park.

The shots fired Tuesday night by the La Mesa detective, a 10-year veteran of the La Mesa Police Department, did not hit the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Derrick Eli Henderson. Police say Henderson was taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of 30-year-old Travis Lewis outside the Burlington Coat Factory in La Mesa last week.

“He actually is the one that fired the round. Also, we have two females in custody also for murder who we believe were his accomplices,” said Lt. Bell.

Twenty-four-year-old Kathryn Williams of San Diego and 32-year-old Teishia Miller-Johnson were also arrested in connection with robbing and killing Lewis. A witness told police an argument took place between three people and a shot was fired, dropping Lewis to the ground. He died on scene.

“We don’t believe it was random. We believe there is some sort of relationship between all three,” said Bell.

On Tuesday night, La Mesa police conducted surveillance and located Henderson in the 4300 block of Altadena Avenue. A detective confronted Henderson and ordered the man to the ground multiple times. The man did not comply and began walking towards the detective while hiding both hands inside his waistband. The detective continued to tell the man to show his hands and get on the ground, but he ignored the commands. The detective used his handgun to fire multiple shots at the man, missing him. The man ran through the grounds of the apartment complex. Officers arrested him a short distance away.

San Diego homicide police are investigating the officer-involved shooting, per protocol.
