ESCONDIDO, Calif. — The driver of a pickup was killed when the vehicle collided with a garbage truck in northern Escondido early Thursday, authorities said.

The fatal crash happened on North Centre City Parkway shortly before 6 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 43-year-old man was driving an EDCO trash truck northbound when a 2002 Ford F150 driven by a 56-year-old Escondido man pulled out from Ivy Dell Lane into the path of the larger vehicle, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said. The trash truck hit the pickup broadside, killing the driver instantly, Bettencourt said. The trash truck driver was not seriously injured.

Centre City Parkway was closed for several hours because of the crash. It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol played a part in the accident, which remains under investigation, Bettencourt said.

The names of the drivers were not immediately released.
