ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A 37-year-old man was stabbed to death during an apparently gang-related brawl at an Escondido park, police said Thursday.

Dispatchers received several calls shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from people reporting a fight involving roughly 20 people at Grove Park on East Mission Avenue near North Ash Street, Escondido Police Lt. Chris Lick said.

Officers responded to the scene and found the 37-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds and head trauma, Lick said.

The victim was taken to Palomar Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the lieutenant said, adding that the man’s name was withheld pending family notification.

Several people were detained for questioning, but it was not immediately clear if anyone has been arrested.

Anyone with information about the stabbing was urged to call the Escondido Police Department at 760-839-4722 or the department’s anonymous tip line at 760-743-8477.
