CAMP PENDLETON – San Onofre State Beach on Camp Pendleton remained closed Sunday, after a swimmer was attacked by a shark, according to base officials.

The beach was closed at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and could remain closed for up to 72 hours, according to an announcement on the base’s web site.

A woman was bitten by a shark on the leg while wading in the surfline. She was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Marine Corps Lt. Abigail Peterson said.

The extent of injuries was not available, Peterson said, but a witness who helped the woman get to the shore told reporters that the her leg was injured from the thigh down.

Hospital officials could not release information, citing the patient’s privacy rights.
