SAN DIEGO -- A 19-year-old man who was part of a group brawling with bats in a parking lot suffered serious injuries Thursday when he was hit by an SUV and dragged 20 feet.

About 10 young men were fighting with baseball bats in the parking lot of the North Gate Market in the 5400 block of University Avenue about 8:10 p.m., San Diego police Lt. Steve Shaw said.

“They’re saying about 10 people were involved in the fight," Shaw said. "We don’t know if it was a group against one person or if it was an evenly matched group. According to witnesses it looked like all 10 people were just kind of slugging it out against each other.”

During the melee, a blue or green SUV accelerated towards the group, Shaw said. Everyone scattered except for the victim, he said.

“It’s been described as a Ford Explorer or a Blazer,” Shaw said.  “It appears that the driver of that SUV intentionally ran over our victim."

After hitting and dragging the young man, the SUV, which had four people inside, left the parking lot and drove off in an unknown direction, police said. The driver was described only as a male with a skinny face and wearing a black baseball cap and black shirt.
