SAN DIEGO — The Padres made team history Monday night losing 15-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park on Opening Day.

The loss marked the largest Opening Day defeat in the franchise’s 48-year history, as well as the most lopsided Opening Day shutout ever in Major League Baseball.

“No one wants to come out and lay an egg on Opening Day,” said Padres manager Andy Green after managing his first game at the Major League level. “But it’s one of 162. Everybody gets smoked like this during the season. It’s not a big deal in the long run.”

Tyson Ross (0-1) started on the mound for the Padres and struggled from the first inning, giving up back-to-back doubles to Chase Utley and Cory Seager. He gave up eight runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in  5 1/3 innings.

Former National League MVP and three-time Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw (1-0) took the mound for the Dodgers and kept the Padres quiet, striking out nine and allowing just a single hit in seven scoreless innings.

Los Angeles first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, a Chula Vista native and former Padre, led the Dodgers offense, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The night was also a homecoming of sorts for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. The Vista native played two seasons in San Diego spent the past five years on the Friars’ coaching staff.

It was the first Opening Day matchup of two rookie managers since 2007.

The Padres will host the Dodgers again Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Petco Park.
