SAN DIEGO -- Opening day at Petco Park brought thousands of baseball fans to a sold out stadium Monday afternoon.

The San Diego Padres opened the season at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers for the third time in the last five years.

The Padres have won eight of 12 home openers at Petco Park, with some fans making this their first opening day game.

"I’ve never been able to go to opening day before. There’s just an energy about it that you don’t really get with a normal baseball game so I’m just really excited to be here," said Josh Fiacco.

Traffic was also a concern going into the day that included a block party in the East Village.

"Took me about 15 minutes to get through traffic, but its been busy but it’s good," said Matt Sieracki, a driver with The Free Ride.

With the games conclusion the countdown to the MLB All-Star game has begun.  This season will be the third time San Diego has hosted the All-Star game and the first time the game will be hosted at Petco Park.
