SAN DIEGO — Michael Murphy, who managed an overhaul of the Old Globe and produced a season that sent two shows to Broadway, will leave the theater in Balboa Park next month to take a position in New York state, it was announced Monday.
Murphy has been managing director of the theater for four years, and served as general manager for the previous nine.
According to a Globe statement, he oversaw production, education, human resources, information technology, facilities and front-of-house operations.
He also managed the construction of the Globe’s new theater and education facilities, the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, which opened in 2009.
“The board is sorry to see the very talented Michael go, but at the same time we are so proud and happy about the tremendous career opportunity he is embarking upon as president and CEO of Shea’s Performing Arts Center,” said Vicki Zeiger, chairwoman of the Globe’s Board of Directors.
“Michael has done extraordinary work over the 13 years he has been with the theater helping to take it to the level it is today,” she said.
Shea’s Performing Arts Center, in Buffalo, features more than 250 performances and events per season in three venues.
Murphy produced the 2012 season at the Globe, which included two shows that wound up on Broadway, “Allegiance” and “A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder,” which won four Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical.
“In the 13 years I’ve been here I’ve watched the Globe continue to grow in its national prominence and deepen its service to San Diego and I’m so proud to have made a contribution to that growth,” said Murphy, whose last day at the theater will be Sept. 26. “I’m grateful to the artists, board members, donors, staff and audiences who each play an important part making the Globe the flagship arts organization of San Diego.”
Globe management is developing a transition plan until a replacement can be named, according to Zeiger.
