48802003LA MESA, Calif.  — An off-duty firefighter was recovering today from first-degree burns he suffered while trying to put out a fire in the attached garage of his neighbor’s La Mesa house.

The fire in the 9500 block of Gregory Street was reported at 10:37 p.m. Tuesday, said Deputy Chief Gregory McAlpine of Heartland Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters arrived in about five minutes and took another 12 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which displaced a man from the one-story, one-family residence, McAlpine said.

The injured man, who suffered burns to his chest while using a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put the blaze out, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment, McAlpine said.

About 15 firefighters responded to the fire, McAlpine said.
