OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Oceanside residents took the first steps Thursday evening to tackle parking problems near the beach.

The city held its first public workshop on parking to brainstorm new rules.

"We're seeing more development. We're seeing more density. And as I said, we're seeing more visitors," said Oceanside City Planner Russ Cunningham.

Last December, the city started comparing parking standards with nearby beaches. City officials also conducted a survey, which showed parts of Pacific Street (the street closest to the beach) and Coast Highway had the worst parking-related problems.

Input from the meeting will likely include stricter parking standards for homes, places to implement more public parking and stronger parking enforcement, says Cunningham.

Final parking ideas will go through City Council. It could be months before residents see any changes go into effect.
