SAN DIEGO — Authorities Wednesday released the name of a 56-year-old construction worker killed in a structural collapse at an Oceanside commercial project site.

Kenneth Schultz of Oceanside was using a hand-held hydraulic machine to compact dirt in a drainage channel at the partially built FedEx distribution center in the 1400 block of Avenida del Oro when a section of retaining wall fell on him for unknown reasons at about 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to police and the county medical examiner’s office.

By the time a crane operator was able to right the roughly 3- by 12-foot slab of concrete, the Oceanside resident had died, said Felipe Rodriguez, a division chief with the Oceanside Fire Department.

The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened an investigation into the fatality, as is standard for serious industrial accidents in the state.
