SAN DIEGO – The northern white rhino is one animal closer to extinction after San Diego Zoo Safari Park officials announced the death of 44-year-old Angalifu Sunday.
Angalifu, one of six northern white rhinos in the world, died Sunday, apparently from old age, park officials announced.
There is only one elderly northern white rhino, Nola, left at the Safari Park, one at a Czech Republic zoo and three in Kenya.
The rhino was transferred from Khartoum, Sudan to San Diego Zoo in the 80s.
San Diego zookeepers attempted to breed Angalifu and Nola, but were unsuccessful.
