duiSAN DIEGO — California Highway Patrol officers arrested 14 suspected drunken drivers on San Diego County’s freeways and in unincorporated areas between about 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve and 6 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

Over the same time period one year ago, 23 suspected drunken drivers were arrested by the CHP in San Diego County, according to CHP officials.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the county reported no fatalities during the most recent New Year’s reporting period, compared to one local fatality a year ago, CHP officials said. One person was found in a wrecked truck on State Route 67 in Lakeside minutes after the reporting period ended, and later died in a hospital.

Statewide, CHP officers arrested 324 suspected drunken drivers, 10 fewer than a year ago, the CHP reported. Law enforcement officers throughout the state reported five fatalities this year, compared to four last year, authorities said.

Escondido police officers patrolling the city’s streets for suspected drunken drivers on New Year’s Eve made two arrests, and issued two citations for driving without a license or with a suspended license, a police official said.
