LA JOLLA, Calif. – Kayakers fishing a little over a mile from the La Jolla Shores boat launch took video of their encounter with a hammerhead shark Saturday.

Ryan Donigan and a few other kayakers saw the shark circling around 9 a.m. Saturday and had their cameras rolling.

“I noticed the fish circling around in front of me and a few other kayakers, but [it] seemed half curious and half hunting,” Donigan said. “Personally, I didn’t feel in danger, but very enthralled by this awesome shark.”

Donigan told FOX 5 he did not report the encounter to lifeguards since it was off the beach “by a good amount.”

In recent weeks, other kayakers fishing in the same area took video of a hammerhead shark.  The first reported sighting caused San Diego lifeguards to close the beach.

Hammerhead sharks are rarely seen near the shore, Lt. Andy Lerum of San Diego Lifeguards said. However, warm weather and currents from the south made San Diego waters warmer than usual.
