OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A 49-year-old Navy commander from Oceanside was killed in a non-combat-related incident in Qatar, the Department of Defense announced Sunday.

Cmdr. Christopher E. Kalafut died Friday at Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, Qatar, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, military officials said. The incident was under investigation.

Kalafut was assigned to Naval Amphibious Liaison Element, Combined Forces Air Component Center, U.S. Central Command, according to the Department of Defense.

Kalafut left for Qatar in July for a 9 month deployment to work in the aircraft control center on base, according to his father. He was on a non-flying assignment.

When he wasn’t working for the military, Kalafut was a commercial airline pilot for Delta Airlines.

Kalafut, an El Camino High School graduate, is survived by his wife Mary and their five children.

No details regarding his death were released.
