OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Oceanside police were working Tuesday to piece together what led to a crash that left a 25-year-old motorcyclist in critical condition.

The rider, identified by police as Brent Brown, veered off a curve along eastbound Vista Way and struck a curb near Italia Way around 7:20 p.m. Monday. He was thrown from the motorcycle and struck a sign while airborne, Oceanside police Sgt. Ignacio Lopez said.

Bystanders stopped to help the unconscious rider before medics arrived. Lopez said Brown was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit to be treated for major head trauma.

Lopez said it was unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Police asked anyone with information on the crash or the events leading up to it to call 760-435-4882.
