ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Authorities Monday said a 26-year-old man killed when his motorcycle veered off a curving roadway and struck a tree in the San Pasqual area was an active-duty Camp Pendleton Marine.

Steven Michael Cox of San Diego apparently lost control of his westbound motorcycle when he took a curve too fast in the 18200 block of San Pasqual Valley Road around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Cox died at the scene, authorities said.
