OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A motorcyclist died after smashing into the rear of a sedan at a high speed on state Route 78 , the California Highway Patrol said Friday.

The 43-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Passat told officers she was headed east on the freeway near College Boulevard at  freeway speeds at 9:30 p.m. Thursday when she saw the 35-year-old victim and another rider quickly approaching  in her rear view mirror, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said. The Volkswagen’s driver was attempting to move out of the fast lane when the victim’s 2000 Kawasaki Ninja struck the back of her car.

Bettencourt said the Oceanside man was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene.

His name was not immediately available.

The fatally injured rider’s companion, who was on another motorcycle, did not stay at the scene after the collision, and it remained unknown if that rider was involved, Bettencourt said.

The Volkswagen’s driver was not hurt.

Bettencourt said neither alcohol nor drugs were apparent factors in the crash.
