Money woes force San Diego Opera to fold after “Don Quixote”

SAN DIEGO — Bad news on the cultural front: the acclaimed San Diego Opera is folding because of money problems.

The last performance will be Massenet’s “Don Quixote” on April 13, the opera’s general manager and artistic director Ian D. Campbell announced Wednesday.

The opera’s board opted for the “heart-wrenching but unavoidable decision” to fold rather than enduring bankruptcy, board chairman Karen Cohn said.

The patron base and donor base for operas is diminishing, officials said, forcing closure of operas across the country.
