ALPINE, Calif. — Sheriff’s deputies sought Tuesday a man who attempted to lure an Alpine girl into a minivan that had a second man inside.

The white minivan pulled up alongside the 10-year-old victim as she was playing outside an apartment complex on Arnold Way near Tavern Road around noon Monday, sheriff’s Sgt. Laura Whalen said.

The driver asked the girl if she wanted a ride and if she wanted some candy he claimed was inside. Whalen said the man in the passenger seat stayed inside the van during the exchange.

The girl did not get into the minivan. Instead she ran away and hid in some bushes, then told her parents, Whalen said.

The victim described the suspect who attempted to lure her into the minivan as a white man which freckles. He was wearing black sweatpants and a black hooded sweatshirt with the drawstring pulled tight around his face. A description of the passenger was not available.

The minivan was white and had tinted side windows. Whalen said it had a pink breast cancer sticker on the back door and two pieces of lumber on its roof.

Anyone with additional information was asked to call the sheriff’s department at 858-565-5555 or the Alpine station at 619-659-2611. Anonymous tips can be relayed via Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
