The head-on collision caused by an alleged drunk driver going the wrong way on State Route 163 near Interstate 8 killed 24-year-old Anne Baldock and 23-year-old Madison Cornwell. Three other passengers in the car identified as Jared Molitoris, Yuki Iizuka, and Stosh Ozog, also UCSD medical students, were seriously hurt. One remains in intensive care.
The dean of student education at UCSD says the girls were well-liked and exceptionally bright.
“The students saw Anne as one of the smartest, gifted but still humble and nicest women in their class," said Dean Maria Savoia. "They saw Madison as a light that was always positive about everything.”
Twenty-one-year-old Jason Riley King, the driver of the F-350 pick-up truck going the wrong way on the freeway, is a Marine stationed at Miramar. He also suffered serious injuries and remains at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.
He will be arraigned from his hospital bed Wednesday.
