CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A man became trapped underneath a truck and died Monday afternoon following a chain-reaction crash in Chula Vista that injured three other people, authorities said.

The collision happened around 1:15 p.m. near 4th Avenue and Shasta Street. A man driving a Chevrolet commercial truck hit the back of a parked Chevrolet Silverado, which then hit a second parked vehicle and a man who was crossing the street.

“She witnessed when he got struck and ended up under the car,” Bryan Mendez said on behalf of his friend Ana Sanchez, who speaks Spanish.

Mendez and her family were meeting with the man who was looking to rent a place for his daughter to live in. She said he waved to her before crossing the street, not seeing the utility truck that was driving their way.

Medics took the pedestrian to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Two children and an adult who were inside or near the Silverado were transported to hospitals to be treated for minor injuries, Chula Vista Battalion Chief Darrel Roberts said.

The driver of the commercial truck stayed at the scene did not appear to be injured, Kahl said. It was not yet known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

Fourth Avenue was closed between H and I streets for several hours.
