SAN DIEGO — A man who was trapped between the frame and flat bed of a tow truck in Otay Mesa died Friday, the San Diego Fire Department said.

The tow truck driver was discovered trapped around 11:20 a.m. in an auto yard along the 7300 block of Pogo Row.

Crews arrived at the scene at 11:32 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at 11:46 a.m.

“From what I know, one of the workers was walking by and saw him laying between the bed and the chassis. He basically came out screaming and yelling really hard,” said Johnny Chavez, who subleased the yard to the victim.

Chavez said the man was working alone doing maintenance on his tow truck when he was crushed. “I guess the bed crushed his head between the chassis and the bed — you’re talking at least four to five tons going on top of your head. I’m sure he died instantly,” Chavez said.

Workers said the victim was a hard-working father and husband who lived with his family in Tijuana.

The San Diego Police Department was investigating the incident.
