VISTA, Calif. — Authorities Friday released new details about the murder of a 21-year-old man who was found shot to death on the side of a road in Vista.
Prosecutors identified the victim as D’Angelo Charon, a San Diego resident. His body was found Wednesday at around 5:30 a.m. on the side of Twin Oaks Valley Road near Gopher Canyon Road . After an autopsy showed Charon died from multiple gunshot wounds, San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide.
Shyrehl Wesley, 20, pleaded not guilty Friday to first-degree murder and was being held on $6 million bail.
Deputies arrested Wesley, who was on parole for armed robbery, Thursday at a home on Alabama Street in San Diego and booked him into the San Diego Central Jail on one count of murder and parole violation.
Deputies also arrested Chevis, the 18-year-old girlfriend of Wesley, at a home on Clairemont Drive in San Diego and booked her into the Las Colinas Detention Facility on one count of murder. She is expected to appear in court Monday.
In court Friday, prosecutors said Charon was shot three times and investigators found 40 bullet casings at the scene. Prosecutors declined to reveal a motive for the killing and did not say how they identified Wesley and Chevis as the suspects.
Charon, Wesley and Chevis were seen together early Wednesday at a liquor store in San Diego, prosecutors said. Chevis then drove the two men to the remote location in Vista, where Wesley allegedly shot Charon to death. Chevis and Wesley then drove back to San Diego, stopping to throw Charon’s cell phone into Mission Bay, according to investigators.
When police arrested Chevis, they found a .40-caliber handgun that matched the bullet casings found at the murder scene, prosecutors said. The gun’s serial number had been obliterated and it had been wiped clean of fingerprints, they said.
Prosecutors declined to reveal a motive for the killing and did not say how they identified Wesley and Chevis as the suspects.
