SAN DIEGO — A robbery at a City Heights apartment escalated Wednesday into a shooting that left a man wounded, authorities reported.

The holdup and resulting gunfire in the 3800 block of 38th Street were reported shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

Officers arrived to find a 44-year-old gunshot victim. Medics took him to a hospital for non-life-threatening leg and shoulder wounds, Sgt. Ray Battrick said.

The man’s girlfriend told police the couple were standing outside her residence when another woman arrived with two male companions, began arguing with her, forced her into the apartment and stole her purse and other items during a struggle.

One of the men who had arrived with the robber then pulled a gun and opened fire, the sergeant said. The shooter and his cohorts fled in a burgundy minivan.

It was unclear if the victims and the assailants knew each other.
