The deadly confrontation happened just after midnight in an alley off of Hancock Street near the intersection with West Camino Del Rio.
Officers went to the area after a clerk at Hi-Lite Adult Books & Videos reported that a man had come into the store and threatened him with knife. When officers arrived, they found a 42-year-old man armed with a knife outside the store. A patrol officer ordered the man to drop his weapon, but the man refused and started walking toward the officer, police Lt. Mike Hastings said in a written statement. The officer, a 27-year veteran with the department, shot the man, Hastings said.
The mortally wounded man was rushed by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center, but doctors were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police Chief Shelly Zimmerman was called to the scene at one point during the post-shooting investigation. Investigators said that is standard procedure in fatal officer-involved shootings.
The dead man's identity was not immediately released.
