Man killed when he crashes scooter into SUV

SAN DIEGO — A scooter rider was fatally injured in a crash at a Bankers Hill intersection, police said Tuesday.

Corey Thomas Batz, 28, drove his 150 cc scooter up a steep hill in the 100 block of West Laurel Street approaching First Avenue when he slammed into  a Nissan Xterra that had stopped  for a stop light shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, according to San Diego police.

Batz was thrown from the scooter into the back of the SUV.  The driver of the Xterra called 911 and administered CPR until paramedics arrived. Bartz died after being taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, police said.

The SUV’s driver sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to the officer.
