SAN DIEGO — A 52-year-old San Diego man was fatally injured when his van and a car collided on Interstate 5 near La Jolla, authorities said Thursday.
A white Nissan Altima rear-ended the victim’s Ford E-350 van for unknown reasons in the southbound lanes, south of state Route 52, shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The impact caused the van to veer off the roadway, travel up an embankment and overturn, CHP Officer Tony Contreras said.
The van’s driver was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, but later died, according to the officer. His name was not immediately available.
The Nissan’s driver, a 20-year-old San Diego woman, was not injured, Contreras said. She was not suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The crash prompted the CHP to temporarily close two southbound lanes, but they were reopened after the wrecked vehicles were towed away, authorities said.
