LAKESIDE, Calif. — A man is in the hospital after his car crashed into a pole, firefighters said.

It happened around 7 a.m. Monday on Winter Gardens Drive in Lakeside.

The driver was the only one in the car at the time of the crash.

Freyda and Adam Clark live just doors away and were the first people on scene.

Adam Clark said the motor of the car was ejected from the vehicle.

“I was doing some yard work and heard a big bang,” said Adam Clark, who saw the crash. “Parts of the car went flying past me and landed in my front yard.”

His wife Freyda is a nurse and rendered aid.

“I got up out of my chair and came running out and saw the car up against the pole so I went over there to check on the person I’m a nurse at Scripps clinic,” said Resident, Freyda Clark.  “Couldn’t get the door open at first, they got the back door open, there were other people there helping me.  I felt for a pulse, there was a faint pulse people were talking to him and praying with him. We thought he was dead at first.”

According to the California Highway Patrol speed was a factor in the crash.

The Clarks say the road is a problem. It starts at the top of a hill and curves causing drivers to speed and lose control. They say they’ve witnessed several crashes through the years at this exact location, and someone crashed their car just this weekend.

“This is actually the second one in three days,” said Resident, Adam Clark “This is jokingly called Winter Gardens Raceway.  The signal that came in here about a year ago has improved things but you can’t stop people from flying down the road.”

“It took some time to extricate the patient,” said Chris Downing of the Lakeside Fire Protection District.

According to the Lakeside Fire Protection District, the man is currently in critical condition.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
