SAN DIEGO — A man who died inside a burning apartment in City Heights was screaming for help before firefighters arrived, neighbors told investigators.

The fire in the 4200 block of Wightman Street was reported just before 4:30 a.m. When fire crews arrived, smoke was pouring from the apartment, which was engulfed in flames, fire officials said. Firefighters knocked down the blaze in a matter of minutes, and when they went inside, they found the body of a man between the kitchen and the bedroom.

Police homicide investigators were called to the apartment to investigate.

“The initial reports say that someone was inside the complex screaming for help trying to get out, and unfortunately he was not able to,” San Diego police Lt. Joseph Ramos said. “The reason we’re here now is to see if there is any reason to launch a criminal investigation, and it doesn’t seem there is. It appears that the fire will be determined to be accidental at this point.”

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
