SAN DIEGO -- A man was pronounced dead Sunday after being pulled out of the water off Sunset Cliffs, a spokesperson for San Diego Fire-Rescue said.
The man was fishing along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard near Hill Street before he decided to jump into the water, a witness told FOX 5. When he was trying to climb back onto the cliffs the waves knocked him back, rendering him unconscious, spokesman Lee Swanson added.
The incident was first reported at around 1 p.m. by people setting a wedding nearby. They said two people jumped into the water to try to help him.
Lifeguards on a watercraft found the 61-year-old man floating offshore and pulled him out. Despite using CPR, they could not revive him, Swanson said.
San Diego police found a car they believe belongs to the victim, and are investigating to see if they can learn his identity, Swanson said.
