SAN DIEGO — A 27-year-old man died early Tuesday after falling about 40 feet from Sunset Cliffs Tuesday, authorities said.

Sunset Cliffs Fatal FallA friend of the victim called 911 shortly before 4 a.m. and said the man fell from the cliffs, near the end of Ladera Street, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego police.

The man was at the cliffs with three friends when he apparently stood up to get a better look at the lights behind them, police said. The man lost his footing and fell backwards, landing on the beach below the cliff.

When rescuers arrived, the man was still alive. They attempted to resuscitate the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4:45 a.m.

Crews rigged up ropes and pulleys to hoist the victim’s body up the cliff from the beach. The recovery operation involved about 30 people and took another 45 minutes.

“Fire and police and lifeguards all responded out here. Obviously, one of the challenges out here at the Ladera cliffs is locating the injured parties. Luckily, there was a bystander on the beach who found the individual who had fallen about 40 feet from the cliff and was in very critical condition,” a fire captain said. “That assisted us in being able to locate the individual down on the beach. We were able to put firefighters and lifeguards down there very quickly.

The victim name was not immediately released.

Lifeguards said they respond to about 10 cliff falls in the area every year, though most are not fatal.
