ENCINITAS, Calif. — A suspected DUI crash on Interstate 5 near San Elijo Lagoon left one man dead and another under arrest early Friday.

The fatal wreck occurred about 1:15 a.m., when a 2008 Nissan Frontier pickup veered off the northbound side of the freeway and plowed into a 2018 Hyundai Elantra sedan parked on the right-hand shoulder near Manchester Avenue in Encinitas, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash left the driver of the car, a 72-year-old Florida resident, mortally injured. Medics took him to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, CHP public affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said. The victim’s name was withheld pending family notification.

The driver of the truck, 42-year-old Dean Bednarczyk of Oceanside, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and taken to the same San Diego trauma center for treatment of fractured ribs and other injuries.

It was unclear if the victim had pulled over alongside the freeway due to car trouble or for some other reason, Latulippe said.
