LAKESIDE, Calif. — A 61-year-old man was fatally crushed by a skip loader Sunday while excavating a pipe in Lakeside.

The Lakeside resident and the driver of the small tractor had been working in the 12000 block of Wildcat Canyon Road near Muth Valley Road at 10:15 a.m., according to sheriff’s Sgt. David Hale.

The tractor began to tip as its driver turned, and the victim got between the piece of heavy machinery and a hillside in an attempt to stop it from toppling, Hale said. But the tractor tipped onto its side and pinned the victim against the hillside.

He died at the scene, authorities said.

San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office personnel were summoned to take possession of the body and investigate the incident, according to the sergeant.
