SAN DIEGO -- A man was arrested Friday in connection with a suspicious house fire that killed three members of his family.
Wilber Romero, 26, was arrested Friday for arson and homicide, the San Diego Police Department said.
The fire started early Sunday morning along the 3100 block of Clay Avenue in the Logan Heights neighborhood while Romero's family was inside. Romero's father was pronounced dead at the scene, and his mother and 21-year-old sister later died at a hospital while being treated for their injuries.
Romero's 23-year-old sister and 16-year-old brother were still being treated Friday for the injuries they endured in the fire.
News of Romero's arrest came one day after police announced they were launching a homicide investigation into the fire "out of an abundance of caution."
On Friday, neighbors and family friends organized a car wash on Clay Avenue in front of the home. Donations will go toward covering funeral costs.
Yasmin Fuentes said she has known the family for decades. She said the tragedy is being felt throughout the community.
"It was a huge impact especially because of the kids. I have five kids myself," Fuentes said.
Fuentes said they are looking for volunteers and car wash supplies. They plan to be out on Clay Avenue on Saturday starting at noon and Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
Nearby, neighbors held a lunch and dinner fundraiser at Eduardo's Mercado to raise money for the family.
A GoFundMe is also set up to assist the family with funeral expenses.
Anyone with information on the fire was asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
