Skateboarder hospitalized after car collision in Mission Bay

SAN DIEGO -- A skateboarder was seriously injured in a crash in Mission Bay Sunday, according to authorities.

The accident happened around 8:30 p.m., when a 23-year-old man lost control of his skateboard and collided with a Nissan Altima on West Mission Bay Drive, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The vehicle's airbags were deployed but the driver was not seriously injured.

The skateboarder was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police said he sustained both head and internal injuries as well as multiple limb fractures. San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown described the man's injuries as life-threatening.

Traffic on West Mission Bay Drive is blocked between Quivira Road and Gleason Place. Authorities are asking people to avoid the area.
