SAN DIEGO -- A local Starbucks is now serving up more than just coffee – it's offering support to military members, spouses and veterans.

The coffee shop at 2828 National Avenue in Logan Heights was officially dedicated Thursday as a Military Family Store to support service men and women and their families.

The designated stores are largely run by baristas who are veterans or military spouses. Starbucks teamed up with Blue Star Families, a nonprofit connecting military families to resources including jobs, helping them transition from military to civilian life.

Employee Brittany Osborn's husband is deployed overseas. She said being a military wife is still a new feeling.

“It’s been so fun and the experience has just opened me up to a completely new world,” she said.

Chelsea Clark is also a military spouse. She said designating the location as a family store is beneficial to many and gives them the opportunity to meet other military families and veterans.

“For me personally, knowing what we go through and kind of how difficult it is for some families and how much is involved, I think it’s a great experience being able to help those out and reach out," she said.

In February, a Starbucks in Oceanside became the first family store to open in the U.S. The Logan Heights location is the ninth.

Starbucks plans to hire at least 10,000 veterans, reservists and military spouses by the end of 2018, according to Blue Star Families.
