SAN DIEGO — A SWAT standoff that started Sunday morning ended Monday afternoon after a gunman who police say fired at officers and barricaded himself inside his Mountain View home was arrested, authorities said.

The incident began around 9 a.m. Sunday, when officers were called to the intersection of 46th and T streets after receiving reports of a man threatening others with a gun, San Diego police said.

Tear gas, a bear cat and less lethal tools were not enough to get the suspect to surrender peacefully.

“You saw a wide range of equipment. Less lethal tools and techniques as well as cooperation from other agencies who responded at the request of the San Diego Police Department. The goal here is always preservation of life,” Lt. Adam Sharki said.

Several hours later, around 4:45 p.m., the suspect fired at officers, though no one was hurt, police said. He also threatened neighbors outside of his home then barricaded himself inside.

“Emergency negotiators responded along with the San Diego Police Department SWAT team to try and deescalate the situation and take the suspect into custody,” Sharki said.

After nearly 30 hours, authorities finally were able to arrest the suspect, 68-year-old Reginald Smith, who was taken down by a police K-9 dog, per SDPD.

One neighbor, who wouldn’t go on camera, says Smith had become increasingly aggressive toward neighbors after the passing of his wife.

Smith may face several charges including brandishing a firearm, making criminal threats and attempted murder of a peace officer, police said.
