EL CAJON, Calif. — Two people are dead following a shooting at a large party in East County, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. at a residence located in the 800 block of Renfro Way near El Cajon, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed to FOX 5.

Neighbors called to report hearing multiple shots fired and then another call came in reporting someone had been shot, explained Homicide Lt. Joseph Jarjura.

Responding deputies found a large number of people leaving the scene by foot and in vehicles. This prompted authorities to call in traffic control to help manage the scene.

Lt. Jarjura says officials were informed of an injured individual inside of the home. He says deputies located a 20-year-old man with gunshot wounds and rendered medical aid at that time. The man was airlifted to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased at 4:02 a.m. His identity is being withheld at this time.

“It was over 200 people, for sure because this whole road was blocked off the entire night, probably until four in the morning,” said Dave Ebert, a neighbor of the home where the fatal incident took place. “And then the sheriff’s were letting people out a few at a time. They couldn’t even get the ambulance up the road for the longest time.”

While continuing their search the home, deputies found another man with gunshot wounds and also began rendering medical aid to this individual, officials said. The sheriff’s department said this victim, who is currently unidentified, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:45 a.m.

The circumstances and motive surrounding the fatal shootings are still being investigated. The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is in charge of the investigation.

According to Ebert, the residence became an Airbnb a few months ago.
