SAN DIEGO — A 20-year-old man is dead and another was wounded in a shooting Friday at a recreation center in the Otay Mesa West neighborhood, authorities said.

The gunfire occurred around 7:03 p.m. at the Montgomery-Waller Recreation Center, located at 3020 Coronado Avenue, the San Diego Police Department confirmed to FOX 5.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene while another was taken to the hospital after being shot multiple times, according to SDPD. A third man was also transported to a hospital, but it was later determined that he was not struck by gunfire.

San Diego Police Homicide Detectives were called to the scene to investigate the shooting.

At this point in the investigation, SDPD says it appears the victims arrived at the recreation center in a vehicle and almost immediately encountered a group of men in the parking lot.

Authorities say at least one of these men issued a gang challenge to the victims and then the suspect group began throwing glass bottles at the victims. Then, SDPS says at least one of the men began firing a gun at the victims, striking two of them before fleeing the area.

Authorities say there was information that a white sedan left the recreation center at a high rate of speed following the shooting and drove eastbound on Coronado Avenue. Detectives are still determining its involvement.

Information on the suspects is very limited at this time. SDPD says the best information provided is that the main suspect was possibly a 19 to 20-year-old Hispanic man with a thin build.

Detectives are gathering and reviewing evidence and interviewing potential witnesses, police said. This is an open and ongoing investigation.
