SAN DIEGO — One man died and a second man was hurt when someone opened fire at a Linda Vista park Sunday, according to police.

The San Diego Police Department said a 27-year-old man was at the handball court at the Linda Vista Recreation Center on Levant Street with family and friends around 11 a.m. when someone with a gun approached him from behind.

Witnesses described hearing up to 10 gunshots, several of which hit the victim in the head, according to police. The 27-year-old died from his injuries and a second man came to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police haven’t released their identities.

Based on information from witnesses, officers believe the suspect may have gotten into the back of a small four-door car, possibly a white Ford Escort. Two people were reportedly inside.

There was a soccer match going on at the time of the shooting, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
