SAN DIEGO — An area of Ocean Beach has reopened after investigators spent the morning searching for evidence in a deadly shooting.

A man was found fatally shot early Tuesday on the sand in the Ocean Beach area, police said.

Dispatchers received a call shortly after 1 a.m. from a person who reported that a man had been shot on the beach in the 1900 block of Abbott Street, near Lifeguard Tower 2, San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said.

Officers responded and were directed to an unconscious man in the sand who had suffered at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, Brown said.

The victim, believed to be in his 50s or 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene, the lieutenant said. He has not been identified, but witnesses told investigators they believe he was homeless and frequented the Ocean Beach area.

“It is still early in the investigation and detectives do not yet know what occurred prior to the shooting,” Brown said. No suspect description was immediately available.

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the SDPD’s homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
