SAN DIEGO — A man has been arrested in connection to a deadly stabbing Wednesday at an East Village apartment, San Diego police said.

According to SDPD, the stabbing happened inside an apartment unit in the 600 block of 14th Street.

Shortly after 10:45 p.m., officers from the Central Division responded to a call from an individual reporting he found his roommate deceased, said Lt. Steve Shebloski with the SDPD Homicide Unit.

Once at the scene, officers found a dead man with multiple stab wounds to his upper body. SDPD immediately began to work the investigation as a homicide. The victim was described by police as a 38-year-old man.

Meanwhile, a woman at the apartment complex flagged down police by throwing things out of her apartment window, said Lt. Shebloski. She informed them her boyfriend was allegedly acting strange and violent.

At that time, officers ultimately checked the welfare of the woman’s apartment. Based on some physical evidence, including injuries seen on his body, the boyfriend was detained by officers.

The man, identified as 25-year-old Maxwell Logan, had blood on him and injuries consistent with him having been in a confrontation where a cutting or stabbing object was used, police said.

According to Shebloski, Logan was detained at the scene on suspicion of a domestic violence case and named a person of interest in the deadly stabbing.

During their initial investigations, SDPD homicide detectives learned that the victim was at home when the suspect entered the unlocked or open apartment and attacked him, Shebloski said. Police say the attack appears to be random and unprovoked.

On Thursday, police announced that Logan was arrested on suspicion of murder and false imprisonment and booked into San Diego County Jail.

Detectives are still in the process of gathering evidence, interviewing potential witnesses and finding any surveillance footage in the area.

Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 619-235-8477.

The intersection at the 600 block of 14th street was blocked off for several hours as police processed the scene.

“There’s a lot of violence in this neighborhood and there needs to be something needs to be done about it,” Christopher Wagner, a San Diego native, said to FOX 5.

Wagner lives on the streets in East Village, where he says safety has plunged.

“Everything is so bad since the pandemic. It’s changed everybody’s lives, mine’s too. I guess lately, the bad side is coming out of a lot of people,” Wagner said. “I’m always on guard, I’m on guard 24/7. I try to get rest, but I can never get rest because you never know what kind of people want to bother you.”
