SAN DIEGO – A teenager who had been reported missing while walking her dog in Poway was found safe Wednesday, authorities said.

“Cassidy and her dog have been located and are safe,” the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department tweeted around 7:50 p.m. “The Sheriff’s Department and @SDSOPoway would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance.”

Before being located, 13-year-old Cassidy Chan was last seen just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday leaving her home near the 18000 block of Heritage Drive in unincorporated Poway, the sheriff’s department said. Her family told deputies Chan left the home with their small white dog, Lucy, for a walk and never returned. She was reported missing by her family when she didn’t come back, deputies said.

The 28 hours of fear and panic over the disappearance of Chan and her dog ended just 100 feet from her house as a neighbor’s dog started barking.

“My dog starts wiggling and growling, because every time he sees that dog, he growls and I grab him. So, I was talking to our other neighbor, and he saw a movement down there as well. So I said, I want to go put the dog. I put the dog inside my house and I ran and I saw her merging out of the street and hugging that lady that she was walking her dog herself,” neighbor Tony Azar said.

When Azar saw Chan, he exclaimed, “Yes, oh God, I just want to kneel and kiss the ground.”
