SAN DIEGO — Investigators are working to piece together what led up to a deadly shooting at Dave & Buster’s that sent customers running for cover late Thursday.

The San Diego Police Department said its officers got a call at 10:55 p.m. about a shooting inside the Dave & Buster’s restaurant and arcade on Camino Del Rio North in Mission Valley. When police got there, they found customers running from the building and a man down in the dining room.

Police said the 28-year-old man was shot in the torso. Bystanders and first responders gave him first aid until paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:22 a.m. His identity has not yet been released.

SDPD did not have a description of the shooter to share. Witnesses told police they saw a dark-colored SUV leaving the business immediately after the shooting.

A man named Danilo told Sideo.TV that he and his girlfriend had just walked in to Dave & Buster’s and were going to recharge their game card when they heard a loud noise behind them.

“We didn’t really know what that loud thing was, maybe something big fell or something. But then the next two shots were like ‘pop, pop’ and that shattered the window right there,” he said.

Scene footage showed shattered glass on the ground near the entrance.

Danilo estimates they heard up to four gunshots as they ran and hid behind a counter. He told Sideo.TV that they saw a man with a gun but they don’t know if he was the shooter.

“He had a gun to his side. So at that moment I was like, ‘Screw this.’ We crawled all the way to the other side of the counter so he couldn’t see us,” he said.

Danilo said they ended up hiding in a small room shrouded by a curtain with a few employees.

Investigators were collecting evidence and working to talk with members of a large crowd who were at Dave & Buster’s during the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
